For nearly two decades, businesses have sought the internet as either an adjunct to their brick-and-mortar company or as a virtual company for name recognition and exposure and to capture more revenue dollars through sales. As the internet grew, entrepreneurs sought ways to connect customers with these companies, and search engine technology was developed. Over the past ten years, pay-per-click advertising and bidding wars have become the hallmarks of internet search engine companies and ad sites.

Unfortunately, paying by the click also drew the unscrupulous who tried to inflate the number of clicks and generate more revenue dollars through irregular and often illegal means. Experts estimate more than 20% of advertising clicks are fraudulent. Adding to that is the jockeying for key positions within those search engines so that a company’s website link will show up on the first page of a search. Businesses bid for that position, offering to pay higher and higher placement fees.
